Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

Indelible

April 1, 2012

This poem is the first of mine for National Poetry Writing Month (aka NaPoWriMo), a challenge/experiment I took up last year as well:  to write one poem each day for the month of April.  It is a way to give oneself permission to write poorly; a way to embrace quantity over quality.  But also, to revel in the mystery that somehow, sometimes, quantity begets quality.  Here’s hoping.

Indelible

you say it is a ‘j’
but from where I am standing
it looks like a twisted, backward
question mark

begging the question
“Why would you do this?”
an inquiry with no answer
because the truth is
we have all taken a blue pen
and made an indelible mark
on the seat
of the white chair
for no reason

we have all apologized
cried, even
we have all scrubbed the marks
with increasingly caustic cleansers
not wanting to admit
that it cannot be undone
