Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

what the grass knows

June 10, 2011

(a poem of emergence)

though the ground is carefully prepared
our seeds scattered with care
we wispy shoots that spring up
nearly imperceptible
are tender, vulnerable
quivering in the breeze

the sun shines as ally and enemy
offering crucial nutrients
combined with blazing heat
so we depend upon unnatural intervention
daily watering to dampen our shallow roots
sustenance for the scorching afternoons

barely hanging on for life
we wait for the moment of collective singularity
when we grow tall and deep
stretching just high enough
to shade the roots
of our neighbor
