before you were born
I had this dream
of you and your sisters
older, and driving cars
yours wasn’t working
so I reached in the left window
past you
wiggled the shifter into neutral
grabbed the wheel
and pushed you and your car
into a large barn
the audacity of my actions
is still understated
ennobled, even
my will, exerted over yours
the burden I’ll carry all my days
yet I’d do it again
and again
a terrible choice
and the only one
