A few days before her 4th birthday, our daughter Ella visited a thrift store with her mother. When they paused at the toy aisle, the little girl was drawn in by the lure of that classic game ‘Operation’. Fascinated by the idea of carefully removing the pieces of the pudgy man with the electric tweezers.
But she stopped short when she looked at his chest. “He has a broken heart!” She was thinking of her twin brother, whose chest was opened at three days of life, and who eventually died. “I don’t want to look at this any more. I don’t want to see it ever again.”
It’s not funny if you can’t fix a broken heart.
