Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

Benevolent D.I.

March 31, 2009

six weeks ago, boot camp began
a seven-pound drill sargeant
making her way through our house
upending our life and our comforts
mercilessly intent on one goal:
to break us down

when she’s done with us,
we’ll be happy with
four hours of sleep
and a plate of warm food
in the meantime
she screams at us
moves us from our repose
rending the fabric of our lives
undercutting our individuality
our inclination to think of me and mine
our preoccupation with comfort
and indulgence
wringing out our last hope of productivity
transforming us from unique people
into an unthinking, responsive collective:
a family

on rare occasion,
when no one is watching,
she dispenses a kind grunt
or a smile
or a wink
to let me know that boot camp
is not forever

I still am amazed at how little sleep the human body can survive on. This too shall pass, or as Mark Lowry said, you will!

    this is exactly right.

i think you should get a little (pink? or blue?) “Ranger Tab” once you’ve been through this baby boot camp.
