I’ve only listened to it a few times, but I can already tell that Radiohead‘s ‘In Rainbows’ is stellar. I only wish I had gotten it sooner. Yes, I heard that they were giving it away online last year, accepting whatever donation folks wanted to give, and I actually went to the download page and everything, and then chickened out for some unexplainable reason. Then, I heard it was at iTunes and in stores, but I still waited. It took the one-two punch of my buddy iPete going to the show on Sunday (which he still won’t talk about, for some ominous reason) and my friend Rick blogging about it and suggesting some YouTube samplers to get me off my rump and to the store to pick up the CD. Ho-ho my ga-hosh. It’s good. The first two tunes alone nearly floated me out of the car.
Even going back a couple of years, I ignored the urgent Radiohead recommendations of my buddy Dave W., in spite of the fact that he is– quite literally– a rocket scientist. But then in the last two years I picked up ‘OK Computer’ and ‘Kid A’, and I love all of it. Their music is invigorating and relaxing, ethereal and earthy, simple and complicated. It is the perfect soundtrack to any context, from laundromat to coffee shop to car to getting dancing lessons from a 2-year-old.
Another suggestion I should have heeded much, much sooner came from our friend Laura K., who has never steered me wrong about restaurants– Four Sisters and Hee Been the two most notable she’s clued me in about (technically, J and J took us the first time, but we bumped into Laura there subsequently, so it might even be a ‘secret’ restaurant of her’s…). And her recent review of Banh Mi was unabashed and unqualified, and I drive by the danged place about 3 times a week, but I still demurred. What’s wrong with me? The Wife and I finally stopped by a couple of days ago, paid 3 bucks apiece for two completely homemade sandwiches, and were in heaven as we ate them in the front seat of the car. Perfectly salty meats, tangy mayo, sour pickled vegetables, and just a sprig of cilantro, all nestled in a fresh, crunchy French baguette. So, so good.
We went back today. I think it’s gonna take awhile to zero in on my favorite sandwich, but grilled pork and bbq pork are looking really strong right now.
