For several years now, Ryan has been recommending Parker Palmer’s Let Your Life Speak to me. It took him finally giving me a copy last month to actually get me started, and I’m glad to be reading it right now.
One of my favorite pieces so far is the story of when Palmer is with some Quaker friends, looking for guidance for ‘his way’ toward vocation and life-fulfillment. Frustrated at his lack of clarity, he talks to a wise old Quaker woman, who confides that she too has struggled and never found ‘her way’ to open up in front of her. Instead, she has seen a lot of ‘way’ close behind her, which she points out is the same kind of guiding effect.
