Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

MLK: From Comfort to Challenge

January 21, 2008

On this Martin Luther King Day, I’m remembering this great man by listening to the Psalter’s epic song/short documentary “Us vs. Us” (from the free album of the same name) and its surgical separation of the legacy of MLK– which seems to be commonly understood as a largely completed campaign for civil rights– from the larger message of this modern-day prophet: justice for everyone, through non-violence.

Listening to King’s later sermons about justice for the poor and an end to war is such a stark contrast to the sanitized version our country commemorates. (Sigh…)

Thanks for checking out my new blog. I can’t believe you haven’t read Wendell Berry–he’s a gem, though a curmudgeonly one. Sex, Economy, Freedom and Community is a great place to start.

    See you in Philly?
