Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

How (Not) to Shovel Snow

January 18, 2008

Heard on the driveway yesterday, repeatedly and with endless variation:

“Please keep your mittens on. Thank you.”
“Well then, don’t take your mitten off, please!”
“Okay, can you leave your mitten on this time?”

“Yes, that is snow.”
“Oh, wow, it is raining, yes.”
“Oh, pretty snow!”

“Watch out, please!”
“Please don’t stand there. Daddy is trying to shovel there.”
“Can you stand anywhere but right there? Thanks.”

“Well, we’re almost ‘all done’.”
“Just another minute, please…”
“I miss Mommy, too. Mommy is at work.”
