Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

Spanish Savant

November 11, 2007

After an ill-advised Sunday afternoon trip to Target, The Girlie and I were returning to the car. In our customary fashion, we were attempting some observational language acquisition, noting birds and cars and carts and people and such (there were plenty of cars and carts and people). Pulling a ring of jangly metal out of my pocket, I inquired, “Ella, can you say ‘keys’?”
Free associating, I absent-mindedly threw in some of my hack Espanol: “can you say, ‘javes’?”
Her response was perfectly inflected, like she’d just gotten in from Mexico: “llaves!”

Her perfect enunciation is enough to make me wonder what she’s learning at church. Maybe bi-lingual Ethan has been leading children’s church…
