Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

It Happened

May 14, 2007

The Girlie has been diligently avoiding walking for weeks now. She’s mastered all of the component parts– standing, stepping, and balancing– by walking along the furniture and by having someone hold her hand. But when her fingers are finally pried off of whatever she’s holding on to, she very deliberately lowers herself to the ground and crawls on to her objective.

But today, we were doing some major cleaning and reorganizing. Storing the winter clothes, clearing the shelves, going through old boxes, and just generally tearing the place up. I had crawled all the way back into the deepest storage area when The Wife summoned me. After extricating myself, I saw Ella, in all of her glory and absolutely rock steady, taking small and certain steps across the kitchen and stopping now and again to look around and wave to us as we squealed with delight and she seemed to wonder what all of the fuss was about. We grabbed the cell phone to shoot some video while she stood and walked for what must have been two full minutes before she finally lowered herself to the floor.

That’s right, girlie. You take your sweet time. Make ‘em wait a long while for you to do it again, too.
I’m so proud of you! Just don’t get confident with stairs, yet, okay?
