Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

Daddy Day Care

November 6, 2006

Much as I’m enjoying these days with Ella, I’m a little worried that I’m working myself out of a job.

Exhibit A: With The Girl safely strapped into her swing, I turned away for a few seconds to start a pile of poopy clothes to soak. When I turned back, I noticed that the swing was swinging. “That’s funny,” I thought to myself, “I don’t even remember turning it on!” Then I noticed an almost imperceptible shimmy in her hips and shoulders. The kid was swinging all on her own!

Exhibit B: Later, at Trader Joe’s, she totally put her pacifier into her own mouth. (She’s almost done this previously, but usually pulls it back out after forgetting the all-important step of ‘letting go’.)

She’s a genius, I tell you!

I think working yourself out of a job is pretty much the point of parenting. At least that’s my take on it.

And, of course Ella’s a child prodigy! Was there ever any doubt?

Ah! I noticed she was just about there with the paci on Saturday night! That so freaked me out — and tickled me pink — the first time Lizzy did it. (but she sure never learned how to swing herself… Oh, that Ella!)
