When The Girl is very tired, or when she’s awakened abruptly from a nap, I try to comfort her and get her (back) to sleep. And my current method does wonders for her, though I can’t imagine it working for me or anyone else. I will lay the heel of my hand on the edge of her pacifier, then place my palm and fingers flat across her cheek and covering her ear. I’ll then lean in close to put my face next to hers so that I can make shushing noises into her other ear. I do this until there’s a layer of sweat between my hand and her face, and the side of her head is damp with my hot, stinky breath. She loves it.
Her favorite lullabye is mine, too. It comes to us via Erin, Innocence Mission, and Mary Poppins.
Stay Awake
stay awake, don’t rest your head
don’t lie down upon your bed
while the moon drifts in the skies
stay awake, don’t close your eyes
though the world is fast asleep
though your pillow’s soft and deep
you’re not sleepy as you seem
stay awake, don’t nod and dream
stay awake, don’t nod and dream
