Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

Elevation

October 21, 2005

I’ll just say it: I am greedy, selfish, and indulgent. I have seen U2 twice in the past six months. What’s worse, the wife and I dropped a few bills on some nice seats this time around.
I felt guilty about all of this, up until the point when the lights went down. Then, I was transported to that place where that which is right is beautiful and obvious, where what is wrong with the world seems ugly and distasteful, and where we all cry out for God’s Kingdom to come.

“I believe in the Kingdom come
when all the colors will bleed into one
but yes I’m still running

You broke the bonds
and you loosed the chains
carried the cross and all my shame

You know I believe it
but I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.”

It is a beautiful thing indeed when four people can speak for thousands, putting thoughts, words, and feelings to the deepest yearnings of our souls.

And, just as in the Kingdom, not everyone is working off the same program. There are people who are drunk, others who are singing off key, and more than a few who are grinding to “Sunday, Bloody Sunday”. And someone let in two lame guys in suits. But in my book, that just makes it all the more Beautiful.

I’ve got chills. My thoughts, too!

In the last year, I’ve worshipped more singing along to U2 than almost anything else. Mike Doughty (formerly of Soul Coughing) has a really cool tune called “His Truth is Marching On,” that’s been powerful for me too. Though on his blog he just says that he thought the “born agains” would like that one. Hard to figure why the best worship music can’t seem to find its way into the church.

To amend: not “best,” just “my favorite.”

    Ditto to that first comment.
Then again, pack all the fun in now. More power to ya! (oh wait, that’s Petra)
