Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

Canada: Not Really That Bad

July 1, 2005

On this, Canada Day, I want to recognize some of the good things about Canada. They have dominion over quite a lot of really beautiful land. They invented the electric car heater. They make wonderful donuts. And they have this system where people who are sick or injured can receive medical attention without going bankrupt. Pretty great.

But most of all, Canadians are really nice. Today, when I was at my wit’s end on the phone with Microsoft customer service to try to make a way to log in to my hotmail account, I heard a wonderfully familiar accent attached to a person who seemed to actually want to help me. “Are you from Canada?” I asked, and wished him a happy Canada day. He thanked me and cheerfully took me through some adjustments and password changes in an effort to fix me up. When we were finished, he wished me a happy weekend and assured me that the problem was fixed.

It wasn’t, of course. The goodness of Canada, after all, is no match for the evil that is Microsoft. But I had a wonderful ten minutes of false hope, and a chance to appreciate the wonder of our neighbor to the north.

So here’s to you, Canada–

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Best post ever. Hands down. You should mention Canada in all your posts. I mean, how could you go wrong?

  2. do you mean the best on my blog, or in the history of the blogosphere?
