Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

Back to the Grindstone

July 23, 2005

After my bout with the I can’t breathe allergies, and then the I can’t stop scratching kind, I actually went running today.

Taking a break from running is a mixed blessing. At first, I’m all twitchy and nervous and anxious about my lapse. After a few days, it becomes more comfortable, and if I throw an occasional log on the fire (say, a 30 minute stagger) I feel quite alright. But once whatever is bugging me goes away, the yearning for movement comes back and I am compelled to hit the road. Which can really be a drag, because I’ll have lost some fitness and adaptation during my hiatus. All of which makes the comeback that much more miserable.

This break was a shame because I had been diligently building my mileage, and doing weekly hill/speed work. So I was starting to click, and then just stopped, essentially. But today’s Beltway run would suggest that I didn’t lose too terribly much. Sure, the 8 minute pace was laborious, and the heat was oppressive. Both of those things were only minor annoyances a couple of weeks ago. But I don’t feel too bad. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.
