In recent years, the church has tended to think of evangelism as ‘reaching people’. That we need to speak the language of the people outside the church so that we can go out and reach them. So lots of people at this convention are kind of unhappily doing this work of thinking and language acquisition so that they can translate the message that they’ve always preached.
But I think that we need to understand our world so that we can recreate churches in a new way. To undo the arrogance of the modern church– the way the church has alienated those outside of her walls. I’m just afraid that we have several generations of work ahead of us.
