One of the afternoon sessions struck me with this thought:
“Church is not a retreat, but an engagement with the messiness and challenge and struggle of life.”
Is it any wonder why folks stay away from church? If they are looking for retreat, they can find it on TV, or on a pillow, or on a mountaintop, or on a wave. But when the crap hits the fan, and they might instinctively run to the church, they find only a bunch of people who are trying to pretend that their lives are comfortable and without pain.
