Good writing, with a strong point and with life oozing out.

A good movie; a great sandwich

May 2, 2005

Spanglish was a surprising and really good film. One of those thoughtful, funny, quirky movies that gets in your head and stays there. Compelling acting, a good story, and some really funny situations. I think it sheds some light on the whole immigration debate as well.

But for me, the real star of the show was the sandwich. One of the main characters is a top chef, and he comes home late one night and makes himself a killer sandwich and a beer. On the DVD, they even have a special feature where they reveal that Thomas Keller came on as a special consultant and designed this amazing meal. It is a kind of highfalutin BLT plus egg and cheese, and it is a distractingly alluring member of the cast. I’ve tried to make a few of them in the last week, and I’ve been pleased.

Watch the movie; make the sandwich.
